Shoreditch Tabernacle Baptist Church, or ‘The Tab’ is a growing church in the heart of East London. Although located in the Borough of Tower Hamlets, we are on the border of Hackney and the City, hence the name of the famous “Boundary” estate; the first social housing estate to be built in the UK, in 1890, arguably, the world’s first council housing and a slice of London’s rich history. Today, the estate is home to a vibrant mix of Bengali families, city professionals, creative media folk and cockneys. Following regeneration and restoration the community spirit of the estate is kept alive by local residents, The Friends of Arnold Circus, and The Rochelle School is now a community arts centre. The artistic heritage of the area includes the birth of British theatre, as the first ever London theatre was constructed on Curtain Road by actor/manager James Burbage. It was here in Shoreditch that a young William Shakespeare arrived in from Stratford Upon Avon, as a young actor/playwright to begin his prolific career. As we gather to meet on a Sunday morning the area bustles with hundreds of people strolling and hurrying through the streets to visit Columbia Road flower market, to bargain hunt in one of the many vintage shops, grab a full English breakfast or Sunday Roast at one of the local pubs or just relax in one of the many cafes and bars.
All of this contributes to the distinctive buzz and atmosphere that is characteristic of Shoreditch, combining the traditional East End with the thriving business and arts community.
Our Mission Statement is based on Jesus’ statement.
“God’s Spirit is on me (us); he’s chosen me (us) to preach the Message of good news to the poor, Sent me (us) to announce pardon to prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, To set the burdened and battered free, to announce, “This is God’s year to act!” (Luke 4:18-19 Meg)
- We are motivated by our Christian faith and love for Jesus
- We build on our positive track record of 177 years of service to the community here in Shoreditch
- We aim to achieve this through bringing the good news of the Gospel and working to benefit the community in ways that show God’s love for people
- We meet together regularly for fellowship, prayer, worship and Bible Study
- We serve our community through the TAB Centre both by providing hired space for other projects as well asour own.
We are uniquely located to carry this out, although ‘The Tab’ is a growing church, we have a growing core of committed and hardworking members who have sustained the church; through the grace of God, over many years. Our vision for the future is to continue to reach out and grow both in in depth spiritually and in numbers.
To complement our vision of active ministry, we adhere to the Baptist Union of Great Britain’s five core values to be:
An Inclusive Community
Following Jesus in transcending barriers of gender, language, race, class, age and culture. Identifying with those who are rejected, deprived and powerless.
A Sacrificial Community
Following Jesus in accepting vulnerability and the necessity of sacrifice. Seeking to reflect the generous, life-giving nature of God.
